Listserv
Instructions
These are instructions for subscribing
to a listserv at Rensselaer's Hartford Campus.
The name of the listserv used here for instruction
is fictional and is referred to as LIST.
This list does not exist. Your professor will provide you
with the actual list name for your class.
Please remember to replace LIST
with the name of the class listserv in the instructions that
follow.
Listserv is a software application that is
used to create and maintain electronic mailing lists. These
listservs make it possible for people who are interested in
a particular subject to easily send mail messages to other
interested members and carry on discussions related to the
subject of the listserv.
Listservs also handle administrative functions
for a particular list. For example, when an email message
is sent to the list address, LIST@ewp.rpi.edu,
the listserv program distributes a copy of that message to
all members subscribed to the LIST listserv.
The name of the listserv program at Rensselaer's Hartford
Campus is called Majordomo.
To become a member of the LIST listserv
you will need to subscribe to it. Here's how:
- Using your email program, create a new
message and address it to: LIST-request@ewp.rpi.edu
- Leave the subject field empty.
- In the message text area, type in: subscribe
- Send the message
Once you have sent the subscribe command,
you will receive two messages requesting a confirmation of
your subscription request.
One of the messages that you receive will
explain the authentication process.
The other message will contain the authentication
line that you will have to send back to the listserv mailbox:
majordomo@ewp.rpi.edu
That line begins with the command: auth
When your authentication is processed you
will receive a confirmation message that tells you that you
have successfully subscribed to the list along with a welcome
to the listserv email message. You will then start receiving
messages that are sent (posted) to the LIST
listserv. This method of communicating will be useful when
anyone wants to "speak" to all members of the LIST
group. The email message sent to the LIST
listserv will be sent to your email inbox and be there next
time you access your email.
To send a message to the LIST
listserv, create a message and use the address: LIST@ewp.rpi.edu
Type in a subject and your text and send it off. A copy of
your message will be sent to all members subscribed to the
LIST listserv.
You may also find out information about the
LIST listserv such as who is subscribed to
the list, how to obtain previously sent messages, and so on.
These are considered administrative requests and are sent
to the address: listserv@ewp.rpi.edu
For example: you want to find out who are
the subscribers to the LIST listserv. To
do this, create an email message and address it to listserv@ewp.rpi.edu.
Leave the subject field empty. Then type this message: who
LIST. After you send this message you will receive
email from the listserv program that contains the email addresses
of the members subscribed to the LIST listserv.
For a complete list of commands that may
be used with the listserv program you may send an email to:
listserv@ewp.rpi.edu Leave the subject field empty.
Then type the message, help, in the text. You will receive
the help information from the listserv program.
