Foundations of Leadership

Foundations of Leadership (FOL)® is a three-day leadership development workshop designed to assist the development of emerging leaders and managers by increasing their personal awareness, interpersonal effectiveness, and managerial abilities. FOL is offered by Rensselaer at Hartford under specific license from The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®). Specifically, FOL examines the dynamics of leadership as they relate to influence, conflict management and goal setting. To achieve the greatest possible results, a number of different methods are employed. These include assessment questionnaires, well researched leadership models, experiential activities, "real-life" case studies, and one-to-one consultations.

Research conducted by The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL ®) has determined that certain factors are critical to effective leadership, especially for new managers. These factors form the basis of the FOL goals, which are:

  • To increase the personal awareness of each participant
  • To teach each participant strategies for effective behavior during a conflict
  • To teach each participant how to influence others effectively
  • To help each participant chart their own course

Pre-work
The path to completing these goals begins with the completion of your pre-work packet. This packet provides the foundation for much of the FOL program, and it requires a commitment of 3-5 hours of work on your part prior to the start of the program. Along with other important documents, this packet includes the assessment instruments that will be reviewed during the FOL. These instruments include the Conflict Dynamics Profile®, SKILLSCOPE®, MBTI®, and FIRO-B. For more information on these instruments, please visit our Assessments page.

Agenda
Day One's activities are focused upon Charting Your Own Course. On Day Two, the emphasis shifts to Navigating Relationships. Finally, on Day Three, lessons learned during the first two days are incorporated into Setting a New Direction. A sample FOL program agenda is listed below.

Testimonial
In commenting on the value of their experience, a previous participant in the FOL program has said:

"There were about 20 people in my FOL group and the diversity was refreshing - there were people from every corner of the country and from various types of businesses. By the time we finished the three-day program, we felt like one big team. You might have extremely different personalities and approaches, but this program helps you understand how you can bring that together and make it work."
