NEWS Rensselaer at Hartford's Summer Computer Challenge UnderwayHARTFORD, CONN – Rensselaer at Hartford's 27th season of Summer Computer Challenge is underway, serving children from three Hartford area elementary schools: Barnard-Brown, Burr, and SAND. Thirty-five students are involved in the free program designed to increase computer literacy and research skills for the technologically driven world. The children interact creatively through hands-on computer training. The computer programs used during camp focus on the integration of language arts, reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Campers learn to use the Internet to conduct research and create their own Web pages. They also explore the use of digital photography to enhance their reports. Guest speakers will include The Institute of Black Invention and Technology, Inc., presenting their “Traveling Trunk,” an interactive exhibit focused on Black inventors and innovators. In addition, field trips are integrated with classroom learning and the theme for the camp, and this year students have the opportunity to visit the Peabody Museum of Natural History; the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum, home of USS Nautilus; the United States Coast Guard Academy; the New England Air Museum; and enjoy a round of mini-golf and an IMAX film. Rensselaer at Hartford is grateful to numerous individuals and organizations for their support and commitment to the camp. This year's Summer Computer Challenge is made possible by generous contributors including: the Aetna Foundation; the Bank of America Foundation; the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; and the Knox Foundation. In addition, the Camp would like to acknowledge catering by Russell's Creative Global Cuisine, and the generosity of a Rensselaer at Hartford staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, who donated the funds to purchase an additional digital camera for the students to use during camp.
