Newsmakers Rensselaer Professor Named Delegate to the Annual Plenary Meetings of the United Nations Commission for International Trade Law HARTFORD, CONN – The United Nations Economic Council for Europe (UN/ECE) named William J. Luddy, Jr., J.D., Professor, Lally School of Management and Technology, Rensselaer Hartford Campus, its Delegate to the Annual Plenary Meetings of the United Nations Commission for International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) held at the UN Headquarters in June and July. Professor Luddy has participated for several years as a member of the U.S. and the American Bar Association (ABA) Delegations (heading the ABA Delegation in 2005) to UNCITRAL's Working Group on Electronic Commerce in the development of its new “Convention on the Use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts.” This Convention was approved by the United Nations General Assembly last November. While at the UNCITRAL Plenary, Professor Luddy attended the official signing ceremony for the Convention on July 6 and also met with the various Ambassadors from various countries to the UN. He participated in development of the ABA's urging of the U.S. Department of State to become a signatory nation to this new electronic commerce convention. Professor Luddy has been a member of the Rensselaer faculty for 32 years and a published authority on computer law since 1986. More recently, he has been a key figure, known internationally, in the development of global e-commerce policy. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Connecticut Bar Journal, the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Legal Studies in Business, and an editorial review board member of the Journal of Business in Developing Nations. Professor Luddy is Chair of the ABA Science and Technology Section's E-Commerce and IT Division, Co-Chair of its International Policy Coordinating Committee, and a member of the Section's governing Council. He is also Vice Chair of the Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility of the ABA's Section of International Law. MEDIA NOTE: Professor Luddy is available for interviews.
