Legendary Rensselaer at Hartford Professor Retires

HARTFORD, CONN – Guido H. Slangen, Ed.D., of Glastonbury, has retired as Associate Chair and Clinical Professor, Hartford Department of the Lally School of Management and Technology, Rensselaer at Hartford. Dr. Slangen provided twenty-three years of outstanding service to Rensselaer, having taught his first course in 1975 as a member of the adjunct faculty when the Institute was known as The Hartford Graduate Center. He has been one of the students’ favorite instructors and a very popular colleague.

"Guido’s contributions to lifelong education for working professionals are immeasurable. He had a great interest in and was very well versed in adult learning theory which he continuously applied to his teaching. He epitomizes all that is great about Rensselaer. His enthusiasm and genuine loyalty will be dearly missed by all of us," reflected Alan C. Eckbreth, Ph.D., Vice President and Dean, Rensselaer at Hartford.

Dr. Slangen taught several core courses in the M.B.A. and M.S. in Management programs, and played an important part in the leadership of the Hartford Department of the Lally School. He is a Rensselaer alumnus having earned an M.S. in Management in 1975. His areas of expertise include: cultural environment of international business, changing values in the workforce, human resources management, and motivation. He has published several articles in journals and has been a guest speaker for numerous lectures. He is actively involved in professional societies and is a dedicated volunteer for community and charitable activities. Dr. Slangen is continuing his consulting business as Managing Director of Slangen & Associates, LLC, human resource consultants.

Many of the thousands of students whom Dr. Slangen taught still keep in touch with him and seek out his advice on their business ventures. He touched the lives of countless working professionals and was honored at several receptions organized by his students, his fellow Lally School faculty members, and the Rensselaer community.
