HARTFORD, CONN – William J. Luddy, Jr., J.D., Professor, Lally School of Management and Technology, Rensselaer at Hartford, was officially welcomed as a member of the Legal Group of the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) at its 2003 North American meeting held in December at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, UN/CEFACT is positioned within the United Nations as part of the Economic Commission for Europe, reporting to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), the highest UN body in the area of economics, trade, and development. The primary mission of UN/CEFACT is to enhance the capabilities of businesses, trade, and administrative organizations from developed, developing, and transitional economies to exchange products and services effectively and thereby contribute to the growth of global commerce. It focuses on the worldwide facilitation of international transactions through the simplification and harmonization of procedures and information flows, particularly in light of emerging global information and communications technologies.

The work of UN/CEFACT is used by numerous industrial sectors and key trade associations worldwide such as the international electronics industry; the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS); the International Air Transport Association (IATA); the International Monetary Fund; the Bank for International Settlements; the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications; and over fifty national administrations in a variety of areas such as customs, transport, health care, social security, and taxation.

Professor Luddy, an internationally known legal and management expert in the field of global e-commerce and information technology, anticipates contributing to the Legal Group’s work related to analysis, research, and review of legal processes and issues related to the work of UN/CEFACT; the development, publication, and promotion of guidelines supporting best legal practice in the field; and the formulation of the legal aspects of international business and government policy.
