EVENT: Robert R. Albright, II, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Lally School of Management and Technology, Rensselaer at Hartford, will present a lecture titled, "Avoiding the Scapegoat Trap: Managing IT/Line Organization Conflict during Strategic Change Efforts." The presentation is part of the Center for Professional, Leadership, and Organizational Development lecture series "IT’s Only Breakfast."

DATE: Thursday, May 20, 2004

TIME: 7:30 - 9 a.m.

LOCATION: Rensselaer at Hartford, 275 Windsor Street, Hartford, Connecticut

ADMISSION: Registration is required and open to all interested participants. The cost of the lecture is $25 and includes breakfast and free on-site parking. Attention Rensselaer students: you may attend the session for FREE when you register a paying friend.

TOPIC DISCUSSION: The session will begin by briefly exploring how the IT function can best ensure it plays a strategic decision-making role in corporate change efforts and other strategic initiatives. Discussion will focus on an analytical model that depicts IT’s link to the corporate strategy. Specific attention will be paid to the critical link between the IT executive and his or her counterparts in the line organizations. A review of a videotape that depicts a problematic system implementation will be used to prompt discussion regarding how to most accurately assess hidden stakeholder interests. Negotiation as a technique to reduce conflict and facilitate change efforts will be reviewed.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Before joining Rensselaer, Dr. Albright served as the Department Chair of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Leadership and Management Department. He has researched and published on labor relations, employee involvement, strategic planning, and the interaction between technological innovation and human resource management. Dr. Albright serves as a member of the State of Pennsylvania’s panel of arbitrators and as a designated fact-finder/arbitrator for the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board. His recent book written with colleague Marick Masters; Conflict Resolution in the Workplace was published by the American Management Association Press (AMACOM).
