2003 Summer Computer Camp Underway at Rensselaer at Hartford

HARTFORD, CONN – Rensselaer at Hartford’s Summer Computer Camp is in full swing, celebrating its 23rd season serving children from three Hartford area elementary schools: Barnard-Brown, Burr, and SAND. Forty students are involved in the program designed to increase computer literacy and research skills for the technologically driven world. The children interact creatively through hands-on computer training during a four-week session. The computer programs used during camp focus on the integration of language arts, reading, writing, and mathematics skills.

Campers learn to use the Internet to conduct research, create their own Web pages in HTML, and how to link their home pages to other Web sites. Digital photography is used to add pictures to student home pages and to further enhance their use of technology and computers to complete their classroom projects. Students visit the Mystic Aquarium Education Center on Main Street in Hartford once a week for activities involving marine studies that are a focus of their research reports. In addition, field trips are integrated with classroom learning, and this year, students have the opportunity to enjoy Mystic Marinelife Aquarium and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The campers will spend one morning during camp volunteering with reading and arts and crafts at the Women’s League, Inc. Child Development Center in Hartford.

Rensselaer at Hartford is grateful to numerous individuals and organizations for their support and commitment to the camp. This year’s Summer Computer Camp is made possible by generous contributors including: The Ensworth Charitable Foundation - Fleet Bank, Trustee; Fleet National Bank; Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; The Knox Foundation; and MassMutual Financial Group.
