Rensselaer at Hartford Faculty Members Receive Shingo Prize Award for Book on Lean Management Principles and Practices

HARTFORD, CONN – A faculty team from the Hartford Department of the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was recognized for the selection of their book, Better Thinking, Better Results: Using the Power of Lean as a Total Business Solution, as a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize Recipient for 2003 awarded by the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing.

The book was published in 2003 by The Center for Lean Business Management, LLC (CLBM, www.theclbm.com) in Kensington, Connecticut. Lead author M. L. "Bob" Emiliani, Ph.D., Professor and Director, The Center for Lean Studies (CLS), Rensselaer at Hartford, and President, The CLBM, LLC; and colleagues, David J. Stec, Vice President, The CLBM, LLC; Lawrence P. Grasso, Ph.D., Associate Professor; and James P. Stodder, Ph.D., Assistant Professor; detail the findings from a nine-year study of The Wiremold Company in West Hartford, Connecticut.

The Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing was established in 1988 in honor of Shigeo Shingo. The Prize, administered by the College of Business at Utah State University, promotes world-class manufacturing and recognizes companies that achieve superior customer satisfaction and business results. The philosophy of the Shingo Prize is that world-class business performance may be achieved through focused improvements in core manufacturing and business processes. Based in the United States, the Prize is open to manufacturers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and to researchers throughout the world. The Prize is awarded annually to recognize manufacturing companies as well as research and writing which addresses innovative manufacturing and business improvement methods, systems, and processes consistent with the Achievement Criteria of the Shingo Business Prize (www.shingoprize.org).

According to Emiliani, "This is the first book to document an actual company’s Lean transformation over a ten-year period. It presents, in detail, what The Wiremold Company did to achieve its transformation and their amazing results, both financial and non-financial. The book vividly shows how Wiremold applied Lean principles and practices to the entire enterprise and throughout the value stream. Wiremold achieved outstanding success in a short period of time by using Lean as a comprehensive management system, rather than as a group of tools. The leadership lessons are invaluable for anyone involved with making the Lean management system come alive in their company."

The book has achieved national acclaim with numerous positive reviews including several from prominent Connecticut-based businesses. Praise for the book came from the following reviewers: James P. Womack, Founder and President, Lean Enterprise Institute, Inc. and co-author, Lean Thinking; George Koenigsaecker, former President, Jacobs Vehicle Systems; Jerry Jasinowski, President, National Association of Manufacturers; Douglas Rose, President, Aero Gear, Inc.; Mark DeLuzio, former Corporate Vice President, Danaher Corporation; and Ronald D. Coleman, Jr., President, The Hitchcock Chair Company, Ltd.
