Events Rensselaer Faculty Members Receive Emerald Publishing Award HARTFORD, CONN Three faculty members from the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, Peter W. Schroth, S.J.D., Professor; James P. Stodder, Ph.D., Associate Professor; and Preeti Sharma, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, presented a paper at the annual conference of the International Academy of African Business and Development (IAABD, www.iaabd.org) in London, April 9-12. Their paper, entitled "Transparency and Information Technology: Toward an Empirical Relationship," received one of two awards for "Highly Commended Paper" presented by Emerald Publishing. Awards were presented to three of the 89 papers published in the refereed proceedings. This paper joins a series in which Professors Stodder and Schroth have argued for a change in the standard by which econometric evidence of the causes and effects of corruption is judged, from "cross-country" to "within-country." Professors Schroth and Sharma argued in earlier papers that the Internet and other new technologies could be effective tools against corruption, citing "anecdotal evidence." In their latest work, the three compared data on Internet usage and on corruption, in Africa and other parts of the world. They concluded that the relationship between increased access to the Internet and reduced corruption is strongly supported by the "cross-country" standard used in nearly all empirical studies on corruption, but still inconclusive by the stricter, "within-country" standard. In their view, most of the published results in this field must now be considered inconclusive, requiring further research. Schroth (www.ewp.rpi.edu/hartford/~schroth/) teaches international finance. He is Director of the Center for Global Business Studies in the Lally School and the Editor of the Journal of Business in Developing Nations. Professor Schroth is a Rensselaer alumnus. Stodder (www.ewp.rpi.edu/hartford/~stodder/) teaches business economics. He is one of the authors of the book, Better Thinking, Better Results: Using the Power of Lean as a Total Business Solution, which was selected as a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize Recipient for 2003. Sharmas expertise is in marketing and e-commerce. She is the founder of the Connecticut chapter of the Internet Society.
