Rensselaer at Hartford’s Computer Science Seminar
Series Presents, "Information Interoperability"

EVENT: Tom Rando, Ph.D., Program Manager for Advanced Technologies, General Dynamics Marine Systems, Electric Boat Corp., will present a seminar titled, "Information Interoperability." The presentation is part of Rensselaer at Hartford’s Computer Science Seminar Series.

DATE: Friday, March 14, 2003

TIME: 6 p.m.

LOCATION: Seminar Hall, Rensselaer at Hartford, 275 Windsor Street, Hartford

ADMISSION: FREE! Open to the public. All are welcome to attend.

TOPIC DISCUSSION: One of the major challenges for the enterprise application is the lack of support for information interoperability. This need is particularly acute for applications that create, manage and need to share complex data, such as engineering models. There are two major approaches to information interoperability. The fusion approach emphasizes agreement on a single global information model; the mediation approach emphasizes intelligent transformation of information. This talk describes a hybrid approach and describes a set of tools that have been developed to support this approach.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Rando is currently the technical lead for the NSRP Integrated Shipbuilding Environment (ISE) project. The ISE project has defined the architecture to support information interoperability across the shipbuilding product life cycle. The project is deploying a set of interoperability tools in the areas of electronic commerce, STEP, and piping and structural product information.
Dr. Rando is active in the ISO-STEP community, where he has led a number of projects. Recently, he was the originator of an ISO Technical Specification for sharing product data using XML. His current area of interest is the development of technologies for information interoperability.
