Rensselaer at Hartford’s Computer Science Seminar Series Presents, "Software Process Improvement"

EVENT: Gregory W. Hislop, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Drexel University, will present a seminar titled, "Software Process Improvement: Creativity, Coercion, and the Nature of Software Engineering." The presentation is part of Rensselaer at Hartford’s Computer Science Seminar Series.

DATE: Friday, December 12, 2003

ADMISSION: FREE! Open to the public. All are welcome to attend.

TOPIC DISCUSSION: The difficulties of controlling quality, cost, and schedule in software development are well known, but still very much a part of current experience. Software process improvement is one attempt to address some of the issues that underlie these difficulties. Initiatives have included the Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the Personal Software Process (PSP) as well as more international efforts such as the SPICE trials and ISO/IEC 12207. These efforts have attracted both support and criticism and the reported results leave ample room for debate.

Other popular process initiatives take very different approaches from plan-based methods like the CMM. The agile methods, such as Extreme Programming, start with very different assumptions that sometimes seem diametrically opposed to the CMM approach, and may have mixed results.

This talk will provide an overview of the process initiatives, with some examples and discussion of results. It will also provide some observations on outcomes of the efforts and implications for the development of software engineering as a profession.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Hislop is Associate Dean in the College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University where he oversees the software engineering and information systems programs. Prior to his arrival at Drexel, Dr. Hislop spent twenty years working in industry and government on efforts related to technology planning and evaluation, software development and support, and enterprise systems management.
