Toolbar & right-click context menu: Search the Cole Library or all RPI libraries using the Rensselaer Libraries' Catalog directly from the LibX toolbar or using the right-click context menu.

Adaptive context menus: The context menu changes automatically depending on what is selected. For instance, if an ISBN is selected, the context menu will offer the option to search directly using that specific identifier. Currently recognized are CrossRef DOIs, ISBNs, ISSNs, and PubMed IDs.

Quick full text access to journal articles with Google Scholar: LibX uses Google Scholar to search for articles and directs the user to the electronic copy subscribed to by the Cole Library. Select a citation, then drag-and-drop it onto the Scholar button on the toolbar. You can use this feature even from inside a PDF file, which makes retrieving papers referenced in a PDF file a snap. The SFX @ RPI links will appear within Google Scholar from any on-campus location by default. For access to the SFX @ RPI links within Google Scholar from an off-campus location, each user would need to do the following steps:

  • Click on Scholar Preferences.
  • Type Rensselaer Hartford in the 'Library Links' section.
  • Check off Rensselaer Hartford Campus (SFX @ RPI)
  • Click Save preferences.
  • Start searching with links to the Cole Library's resources (you will still need to authenticate yourself to access these resources).

Support for off-campus access via EZProxy: Using the Cole Library EZProxy, you may reload a page through the proxy, or follow a link via the proxy, making it appear as though you are coming from an on-campus computer.

LibX cue (RPI Seal) in Amazon book record

Support for embedded cues: LibX places cues LibXin web pages you visit if the Rensselaer Research Libraries have resources related to that page. Whenever you see the cue, click on the link to look at what the Cole Library has to offer. For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble will contain cues that link to the book's entry in RPI’s catalog. Cues are displayed at Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and other pages.

Support for COinS: LibX supports COinS, which can turn certain hidden SPAN tags inserted by authors or publishers into actionable OpenURL links. More information on COinS.

Support for xISBN: A book title can have different ISBNs for the paperback, the hardcover, even for different editions. LibX supports OCLC's xISBN service: you can find a book, given an ISBN, even if Rensselaer Research Libraries hold this book under a different ISBN.

Copyright: LibX is distributed under the Mozilla Public License. The copyright is held jointly by Annette Bailey and Godmar Back of Virginia Tech. It has been adapted for Rensselaer's use by Glen Wiley and for the Hartford Campus by Cecilia Dalzell.

Privacy: By using this extension you may send the URL of pages you are currently visiting to your library's catalog server. Such information is sent only if you are actively using the extension; it is never sent automatically. If you wish to avoid this you must turn off the referrer URL by setting network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0 in your preferences.

For more information about LibX, visit the LibX Homepage. LibX is available for customization by other libraries.
