STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (SIC)
When using many databases and reference sources it is useful to know the SIC code for the industry you are studying. SIC codes for these industries include the following:

• SIC 4011 Railroads, Line-Hauling Operations
• SIC 421 Trucking, Courier Services, except Air
• SIC 4512 Air Transportation
• SIC 4581 Airports
• SIC 4731 Arrangement of Transportation of Freight and Cargo

This is not a complete list of codes for these industries, merely a sample. See the SIC MANUAL for additional codes, also in the Cole Library at REF HF 1042 .A55.

NORTH AMERICAN INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (NAICS)
The SIC system has recently been replaced by the NAICS. Only a few sources are now using these codes, but more will be making the switch in the near future. NAICS codes for these industries include the following:

• NAICS 481111 Scheduled Passenger Air Transportation
• NAICS 482 Rail Transportation
• NAICS 483 Water Transportation
• NAICS 48411 General Freight Trucking, Local

These are samples, not complete lists, of SIC and NAICS codes for these industries. Use the following sources to identify additional SIC and NAICS codes for your company or industry.

  Match 2002 and 1997 NAICS codes in both directions.

Obtain a substantial overview (about 30 pages), statistics and outlook for the industry. Includes a comparative analysis of statistics for the industry's major players.
