STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (SIC)
When using many databases and reference sources it is useful to know the SIC code for the industry you are studying. SIC codes for these industries include the following:

• SIC 1041 Gold Ores
• SIC 1044 Silver Ores
• SIC 1221 Bituminous Coal and Lignite Surface Mining
• SIC 1499 Miscellaneous Nonmetallic Materials, Except Fuels (includes Precious Stone Mining, Graphite Mining and Gypsum Mining)

This is not a complete list of codes for these industries, merely a sample. See the SIC MANUAL for additional codes, also in the Cole Library at REF HF 1042 .A55.

NORTH AMERICAN INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (NAICS)

The SIC system has recently been replaced by the NAICS. Only a few sources are now using these codes, but more will be making the switch in the near future. NAICS codes for these industries include the following:

• NAICS 212112 Bituminous Coal Underground Mining
• NAICS 212221 Gold Ore Mining
• NAICS 212222 Silver Ore Mining
• NAICS 212399 Other Nonmetallic Mineral Mining
