Many databases and reference sources are organized by SIC and NAICS codes, so you will need these codes for your research. The codes classify companies and industries by their primary line of business.

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)
SIC codes for banking and financial services industries include the following:

• SIC 6021 National Commercial Banks
• SIC 6050 Credit Unions, Federally Chartered
• SIC 6035 Savings Institutions, Federally Chartered
• SIC 6211 Security Brokers, Dealers and Flotation Companies

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
The NAICS system is replacing the SIC system. Though most databases and reference sources are still using SIC codes, many are, or will soon be, beginning the switch to the NAICS system. NAICS codes for banking and financial services industries include the following:

• NAICS 522110 Commercial Banking
• NAICS 522120 Savings Institutions
• NAICS 522130 Credit Unions
• NAICS 523120 Securities Brokerage
• NAICS 523920 Portfolio Management

  Match 2002 and 1997 NAICS codes in both directions.
