Many databases and reference sources are organized by SIC and NAICS codes, so you will need these codes for your research. The codes classify companies and industries by their primary line of business.

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)
SIC codes for consulting industries include the following:

• SIC 8742 Management Consulting Services
• SIC 8748 Other Business Consulting Services

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
The NAICS system is replacing the SIC system. Though most databases and reference sources are still using SIC codes, many are, or will soon be, beginning the switch to the NAICS system. NAICS codes for consulting industries include the following:

• NAICS 5416 Management, Scientific and Technical Consulting Services
• NAICS 54151 Management Consulting Services
• NAICS 541512 Human Resources and Executive Search Consulting Services

Get a detailed industry overview including key people and a ranking of key companies. Find industry news, company lists, news, and industry-related website links. Hoover's provides detailed sub-industry links, SIC and NAICS codes, and industry family trees.

Value Line Research Center Auto and Truck and Auto Parts Industry Descriptions (Rensselaer at Hartford login ID and password required)
Retrieve a one page overview and forecast, as well as some industry statistics, for the industry. Also available in the library in print.

Service Annual Survey
Select the data for NAICS Sector 54, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services. Provided by the US Census Bureau.

Find associations related to the industry using Business & Company Resource Center. Use the Advanced Search and select Associations in the Content Area pull-down menu. This gives you online access to the International, US National, and Regional, State & Local volumes of the Encyclopedia of Associations.
