Undergraduate Admissions at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY

Orientation

Thank you for your interest in Rensselaer at Hartford. Before submitting your application, please take a few minutes to read the following information.

Degrees
Rensselaer at Hartford offers Master of Science degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Information Technology, Management, Mechanical Engineering; Master of Engineering degrees in Computer and Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering; and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.). For a detailed description of each graduate program, call to request a Course Catalog.

Schedule
Classes for each course meet once a week during the evening or during the day on Saturdays. International students are required by law to enroll in school on a full-time basis. A faculty advisor will assist you in coordinating an academic schedule that meets this enrollment requirement.

Campus
Rensselaer at Hartford does not have dormitory facilities, but the downtown location offers access to affordable housing, public transportation, and excellent healthcare facilities.

Admission to Rensselaer
Rensselaer at Hartford accepts applications from international candidates who hold, or intend to hold, an "F" visa. Rensselaer at Hartford has highly competitive standards for admission. You are encouraged to apply if your academic record is superior, with standings such as First Class, Distinction, or High Honors. Rensselaer at Hartford requires that official records be submitted. If your college or university’s policy is to issue only one original record, a certified copy of the original may be submitted. Originals or certified copies of transcripts must be in English and include grade (mark) sheets, diplomas and degrees, and results of comprehensive examinations given in your country’s educational system. If you are enrolled as a student in the United States at the time of your application to Rensselaer at Hartford, or you are participating in practical training, you must submit an International Student Advisor’s Report from the Foreign/International Student Advisor at the institution that administers your visa status.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
A minimum TOEFL score of 250 (computer-based total) or 100 (Internet-based total) is required for students whose native language is not English. Scores should be provided directly from Educational Testing Service. If you have studied or been employed in the United States for two or more years, or received a degree from a college or university in a country where English is the native language, the requirement to submit a TOEFL score may be waived.

Financial Aid
Financial aid (student assistantship) is not available to international students prior to admission. Therefore, you are required to provide an Affidavit of Support, for admission and visa-granting purposes, at the time you submit your application to Rensselaer at Hartford. "The Smart Student Guide to Studying in the USA," published by Mark Kantrowitz (www.eduPASS.org) provides general information for prospective international students, as well as more specific information on financial aid. International Education Financial Aid (www.IEFA.org) is a comprehensive listing of grants, scholarships, and loan programs designed to assist international students.

Affidavit of Support
International applicants must demonstrate that sufficient funds are available to meet all educational, living, and health insurance expenses. If funds are to be provided by personal or family savings, a certified letter from your bank must be submitted to the Admissions Office, identifying available funds from your bank. If funds are being provided by a sponsor (personal, government, or business), a letter from the sponsor must be sent to the Office of Admissions affirming his or her intention to assume full financial responsibility for you. A letter from your sponsor’s bank is required, stating the balance in U.S. dollars. The minimum acceptable balance for each year's tuition, textbooks, and living expenses for the 2007-2008 academic year is $50,000. This Affidavit must be provided at the time you apply.

If You Have Never Studied in the United States
To obtain general information about the United States educational system and about financial aid, you are encouraged to contact the U.S. Consulate, American Library, or the Overseas Advising Office in your country.
