Master of Business Administration
(M.B.A.) Program
The M.B.A. program is designed to provide
graduate management education for students who aspire to general
management positions in their organizations or technical managers
with the ability to lead high-level programs and projects.
The M.B.A. is also intended for promising business professionals
and managers with undergraduate degrees in business management
and technical fields. The essential topics of the M.B.A. program
include business strategy, planning, policy formation, and
leadership. It involves the integration of the enterprise
with its business environment, innovation of new technologies,
products, processes and businesses, and strategic leadership
of the organization.
The M.B.A. graduate is intended to become a leader who has
the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to lead change throughout
the organization. The focus is on:
- Leadership - developing the knowledge and skills to lead change and manage people throughout the organization.
- Strategy - the determination of business policies and strategies for integrating the systems, processes, functions, programs, and initiatives of the organization.
- Analysis - understanding the business environment and the forces of change so that strategic direction can be determined and courses of action initiated.
- Capabilities - developing the knowledge and skill set of management theories and practices so that the student has a fundamental understanding of the various management disciplines and an ability to make sound decisions. The skill set includes economics, statistics, marketing, finance, accounting, and operations.
The Master of Business Administration
degree consists of 60 credit hours: 39 required and 21 elective.
Thirteen required core courses cover the foundation disciplines
and functional areas of business management. All students are
required to complete a core curriculum and may choose an area
of specialization. The electives enable students to expand their
breadth or depth of knowledge of management and leadership.
Elective courses should be taken when the student is prepared
to address the subject matter. An area of specialization is
not required for the M.B.A.
It is recommended that students complete the course sequence
as shown in the table below. In particular, MGMT-6650 Technology
and Competitive Advantage and MGMT-6660 Strategy, Technology,
and Entrepreneurship should be taken near the end of the M.B.A.
program. These two courses are open only to M.B.A. students.
The student's Plan of Study must be developed in consultation
with his or her faculty advisor by the completion of his or
her third course.
The thirteen core courses are normally offered every term and
taken in the following sequence:
